STI & Communicable Diseases

Types of STI’s and Communicable Diseases:

TB or Tuberculosis continues to remain in the United States, as well as Kentucky.

Carter County Health Department participates in the TB Prevention and Control Program.

TB can be categorized as Active or Latent TB. Active TB is a highly contagious disease and is spread through respiratory droplets such as coughing and or sneezing.   Latent TB means the person has been exposed to TB at some point, however the person is NOT contagious. Active cases are closely monitored through DOT (Directly Observed Therapy). A Health Department nurse visits the patient daily to ensure they are taking their TB medications as prescribed and to observe for any side effects. TB skin tests are performed on at risk groups within our community to help eliminate TB. Click here learn more about TB.

STI & Communicable Disease Services

STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are highly infectious diseases that are easily spread through sexual contact. ANYONE can contract a STI. Women and men of all ages, races and backgrounds can be affected. Early detection is the key to receiving effective treatment when available. Those affected often have no symptoms but if not treated, STIs can cause infertility, cancer and even death.

The following risk factors increase your chances of getting an STI:

  • Multiple sex partners
  • Unprotected intercourse, including oral sex
  • Drug abuse, including alcohol use

Anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to a STI or who has one the above risk factors can and should be tested. Click on the specific infection name for more information about common STIs, including symptoms. Testing is available to patients under 18. Free condoms and ECP (morning after pill) are also available.
